IoT innovation in the field of precision agriculture, a practice that uses analytics to optimise farming decisions, is a gold mine of opportunities. It is  more critical than ever to maximize yields from every acre of land dedicated to food production. Automating everyday agriculture operations and providing real-time monitoring and data analysis for smart decision making, day-to-day and season-to-season would be the biggest contribution of IoT innovations.

The use of IoT and smart wireless sensors in agriculture and farming ,plant breeders can evaluate the performance of different plants varieties using measurements taken from remote sensors. These sensors monitor things like soil temperature, humidity, and air temperature, and are often used for crop variety trials. This will allows farmers to forecast harvest time, improve plant health, plan irrigation time, and determine frost and heat events. By combining all these measurements, plant scientists will be able to look at the effects of microclimate and genome, improving the accuracy and speed of plant breeding, leading to better food quality and increased production.

Responses to that analysis can be automate to optimise crop yield, ultimately boosting productivity from season to season.

The use of smart farming will spread to adjunct areas, such as environmental monitoring, land management and food traceability. This is a consequence of the greater public focus on issues such as food safety, wildlife preservation and rural areas development. While the M2M agricultural sector is still emerging, M2M and IoT technologies will be key enablers for transforming the agricultural sector and creating the smart farming vision.
